J.Dee Brooks

J. Dee Brooks graduated from Michigan State University in 1980, and from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1983. He has been a practicing Michigan trial lawyer for 34 years, and has worked in public prosecution for 28 years. He previously served as an Assistant Prosecutor for four years in Kent County (Grand Rapids), 14 years in Midland County, including eight years as the Chief Assistant, eight years in Bay County, and has also served as a Special Prosecutor in six other counties. He has served as the elected Midland County Prosecutor since November of 2014.
Mr. Brooks has served on the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) Family Law Committee, instructed at a number of PAAM training programs throughout the State, and has completed several national advanced prosecution training programs, including Computer Crimes and Cyber Stalking, Sexual Assault Prosecution, Major Drug Felony and Civil Forfeiture Proceedings, and Trial Evidence Presentation. He currently serves on the Child Welfare Prosecuting Attorneys Advisory Council.
Mr. Brooks has also served on the Midland City Council, the Shelterhouse Board of Directors, the Midland County Domestic and Sexual Violence Coordinating Council, the Circle of Health Partnership Board, the United Way Campaign Cabinet and Community Allocation Panels, the Tri-County Community Adjudication Program Board (Tri-Cap) and the Health and Human Services Council. He currently serves as chair of the Midland County Community Corrections Advisory Board and the DARE Program Board of Directors and on the Midland County Adult Drug Court Committee. He also is a member of the Leadership Midland Alumni Association (Class of 2002), has been a volunteer coach for the Midland Community Center and the Midland Soccer Club, and is a regular participant in the Midland County Relay for Life and the Torch Run for Special Olympics.
Geoffrey Rettig

Mr. Rettig is a graduate of Western Michigan University, receiving his BS in Political Science/Public Law, cum laude, in 1986. He was conferred a Juris Doctorate degree from the Wayne State University Law School in 1989. During law school, Mr. Rettig served as an intern in the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Presque Isle County, Michigan. Immediately after graduating from law school, Mr. Rettig was appointed Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Presque Isle County.
In 1991, Mr. Rettig was appointed Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the County of Midland, handling all facets of criminal prosecution, including felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile delinquency and neglect and abuse petitions, appeals at level levels. Mr. Rettig was the designated attorney for IV-D services in Midland County, assisting citizens in obtaining child support orders and reimbursement for public assistance.
In 2001, Mr. Rettig entered private practice and became a Shareholder in the firm of Joseph T. Barberi, P.C. During his tenure with the firm, Mr. Rettig represented thousands of individuals in both criminal and civil matters and gathered wide respect as an able litigator and vigorous advocate.
In 2015, Mr. Rettig returned to the Midland County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, being appointed by Prosecuting Attorney J. Dee Brooks as the Chief Assistant Prosecutor.
In his years of practice, Mr. Rettig has been recognized for outstanding ability and distinguished ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbell. He has received recognition for his service by the Michigan Prosecuting Attorneys Association, as well as being name Prosecutor of the Year by the Michigan Family Support Council in 1995. Mr. Rettig has served as a faculty member for the Prosecuting Attorney’s Coordinating Council and the Prosecuting Attorney Association of Michigan on numerous occasions, and has presented on issues of paternity establishment and criminal enforcement of child support to the Michigan Family Support Council. Mr. Rettig has served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Presque Isle County United Way, as a Board Member of the Michigan Family Support Council and as a allocation committee member for the Midland County United Way. He has previously been a member of the Mount Pleasant Lions Club and has previously served as an adjunct faculty member at Delta College, instructing in the areas of legal research and writing, as well as Domestic Relations.
Mr. Rettig has resided in Midland for 25 years and he and his spouse Sheila, are the proud parents of two sons, Andrew and John who attend Midland Public Schools. Mr. Rettig is member of Blessed Sacrament Parish and is a enthusiastic supporter of local youth sports, including MPS athletics, Fraternal-Northwest Little League and Midland Area Youth Football League.
Joseph Amend

Joseph is a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Business Management and Health & Fitness Management. While attending SVSU, he was a varsity letterman in baseball. He received his Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in May 2001, and successfully passed the Michigan State Bar examination in July 2001. During his time at Cooley Law School he completed a prosecutorial externship with the Bay County Prosecutor's Office. Upon admission into the State Bar of Michigan he served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the County of Tuscola from 2002 until 2005, where he successfully handled numerous criminal and civil matters in the District, Probate, and Circuit Courts.
Joseph joined the Midland County Prosecutor's Office as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in April of 2005, where he continues to successfully handle numerous criminal and civil matters in the District, Probate, and Circuit Courts for the County of Midland.
Michael Yelsik

Michael graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in 1995 earning a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Michael received his Juris Doctorate from Thomas Cooley Law School in 2000. While at Cooley Law School, Michael completed a prosecutorial externship with the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office. Following graduation, Michael worked for the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office in a temporary capacity. In 2001, Michael joined the law firm of O’Neil, Wallace and Doyle, P.C. in Saginaw, handling insurance defense, subrogation and other civil and criminal matters. In 2005, Michael worked as an associate attorney for Robert P. Denton, P.C. successfully representing clients in bankruptcy and criminal defense matters. In 2006, Michael formed Adamczyk & Yelsik, PLLC, a law office in Bay City that specialized in Bankruptcy, Criminal Defense, and many other civil matters.
Michael is an avid martial arts practitioner for over 20 years and has earned black belt ranks in Judo, JuJitsu, and Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts. Michael has competed in Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments around the state.
Atea Duso

Atea attended Grand Valley State University where she was a member of the Frederik Meijer Honors College and graduated cum laude with her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2010. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law, summa cum laude, in May 2013. During law school, Atea completed an internship through the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan in the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as internships in the Ionia and Ingham County Prosecutors’ Offices. She also served as the Executive Director of the Appellate Moot Court Board and earned her Trial Practice Certificate through the Trial Practice Institute at MSU College of Law. Atea was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 2013. In 2014, Atea joined the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office where she primarily handles matters in the Midland County District Court.
Patrick Czerwinski

Patrick is a 2008 graduate of Michigan State University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts, with honor, in Business Administration-Prelaw. He received his Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law, cum laude, in May 2011. While in law school, he completed an internship through the Prosecuting Attorney Association of Michigan’s internship program at the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office. After law school, Patrick served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Mason County for two years. He returned to Midland where he served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for five years where he primarily handled juvenile delinquency and child protection cases. That experience led him to accept a position as the Juvenile Referee and Deputy Court Administrator with the 42nd Circuit Court Family Division. In October 2019, Patrick returned to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office and currently serves as an assistant prosecuting attorney handling matters before the 75th District Court as well as appeals to the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.
Patrick is a Certified Child Welfare Law Specialist (CWLS) through the National Association of Counsel for Children. Additionally, Patrick has served as vice-president and president of the Midland County Bar Association. He is also a recent graduate of the Midland Business Alliance’s Leadership Midland Program (Class of 2019 “Death Pants”). He currently lives in the City of Midland with his family.
Emily Richards

Under the supervision of the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Emily is assigned to handle delinquency cases and child protective proceedings in the Circuit Court-Family Division. When assigned, she also reviews and authorizes requests for warrants, determines the appropriate charge, and prosecutes criminal cases. She attempts to resolve and adjudicate assigned cases or tries them in court. Emily joined the Prosecutor's Office in December of 2016.
